Fixed-Fare vs Metered Taxi: Which Is Better for Airport Transfers?

Fixed fare or taxi meter: the short answer

For an airport transfer, a fixed fare provides more price certainty because the journey price is agreed before departure. With a metered taxi, the fare can depend on the starting charge, distance and journey time, so congestion may increase the final amount. Dutch rules also allow a driver and passenger to agree a fixed journey price before the ride begins.

Neither method is automatically better for every passenger. A metered taxi uses published rates and may suit someone taking a taxi from a rank without arranging the trip beforehand. A fixed fare may be easier when you want to budget in advance, compare vehicle options or document an agreed amount for a business or family journey.

The agreed price only answers part of the question. Confirm the pickup address, destination, selected vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, waiting policy, additional stops and payment method. If the route or booking details change, ask whether the original fixed price still applies before the journey continues.

Metered pricing is not inherently unreliable. The key difference is predictability: because journey time can form part of the meter calculation, the final fare may change when traffic conditions change. A valid fixed price normally remains the agreed journey price, subject to the booking conditions and any changes or extras accepted in advance.

Do not assume luggage assistance, waiting time, additional stops or other services are automatically included with either model. Dutch rules permit an agreed surcharge for additional services, such as help with luggage. Read the provider's terms and compare the complete offer rather than only the advertised starting amount.

Both can be used for airport travel. The practical difference is how the price is established and how much certainty you have before departure.

How metered taxi fares work in the Netherlands

For street and taxi-rank journeys in 2026, the Dutch maximum rates for a passenger car carrying up to four people are €4.31 starting fare, €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute. For a minibus carrying five to eight people, the maxima are €8.77, €4.00 per kilometre and €0.59 per minute. Operators set their own rates within the applicable maxima and must display them on a rate card.

*Always check the booking conditions for waiting time, additional stops, journey changes and other extras. Maximum street-taxi rates do not mean every provider charges the maximum.

What to compare before choosing

  • Confirm the total journey price, what is included, whether waiting or additional stops cost extra, and what happens if you change the route.
  • Pickup certainty: verify exact meeting location (Schiphol departures, hotel entrance, street address), confirmation method (email, SMS, WhatsApp), and how delays are handled (automatic adjustment, driver notification, communication process).
  • Vehicle suitability: confirm the vehicle type matches your group size, luggage volume, and any special needs (child seats, wheelchair access, pet carriers). Photos help verify the interior space.
  • Payment options and timing: clarify whether payment is due online upfront, by invoice after the ride, or cash to the driver. Early payment vs. payment on arrival affects your booking process.

When fixed fare is the better choice

  • Airport transfers where advance budgeting matters or journey time may vary with traffic.
  • Families with children, business teams, and groups splitting costs. Fixed prices allow accurate cost-per-person calculation without post-ride surprises.
  • Any trip requiring advance planning, written confirmation, or detailed cost records (business expense reports, family budgeting, event planning).

Frequently asked questions

Is a fixed taxi fare allowed in the Netherlands?

Yes. A taxi driver may offer a fixed journey price, but it must be agreed before the ride begins. Any surcharge for an additional service must also be agreed in advance.

Does a taxi meter keep running in traffic?

A Dutch street-taxi fare can include a time rate as well as the starting and distance rates. This means a longer journey caused by congestion can increase the metered fare.

Can a taxi charge extra for luggage?

An operator may agree a surcharge for an additional service, such as helping with luggage. Ask what is included and agree any surcharge before the journey starts.

Is a fixed fare cheaper than a metered taxi?

Not necessarily. A fixed fare primarily provides price certainty. Whether it is cheaper depends on the agreed price, the actual metered journey and what each offer includes.

What should I check before booking an airport taxi?

Check the complete price, pickup and destination, vehicle and luggage capacity, waiting policy, additional-stop rules, payment method and what happens if the journey changes.
